Julian Stuart-Burns is a composer and pianist from Brooklyn, New York whose music focuses on transformation, sharp and unexpected contrast, and the evocation of memory and reminiscence. He is studying composition in the M.A. program at Eastman School of Music, having received his B.A. from the University of Chicago. Julian had attended festivals in the U.S and abroad, including VIPA in Valencia, Spain, soundSCAPE in Blonay, Switzerland, and the Longy School’s Divergent Studio in Cambridge, MA. His music has been premiered at Kilbourn Hall and Hatch Recital Hall, Field Recital Hall in Chicago, and Pickman Concert Hall in Cambridge, MA. He has studied composition with Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, Robert Morris, Augusta Read Thomas, Dongryul Lee, and Anthony Cheung, and electronic music with Mikel Kuehn and Ted Moore. He is also an acclaimed pianist, having performed recently in solo piano showcases and in ensembles with Eastman’s Musica Nova and OSSIA New Music. Julian has written pieces for loadbang, Mivos Quartet, and the Eastman Graduate Composers’ Sinfonietta. Along with his formal compositional work, Julian loves writing music for games and films, and he hopes to build a career in video game sound design. He has worked at the New York Philharmonic as an assistant in the Archives and Exhibitions department, curating exhibits for the Gary Parr and Bruno Walter galleries in David Geffen Hall.
