OSSIA Board Members for 2007-08 Sara Ballance, violinist/theorist Sara Ballance is a graduate student at the Eastman School of Music, where she is pursuing a Master's degree in Pedagogy of Music Theory. In addition to working with Ossia, Sara currently teaches undergraduate Aural Musicianship courses at Eastman and serves as a research assistant for the Eastman Music Cognition Lab. Sara attended Eastman and the University of Rochester as an undergraduate, earning Bachelor's degrees in Violin Performance, Music Theory, and Brain and Cognitive Sciences. She is originally from Aurora, OR, and wants to go back.
| Reuben Blundell, conductor Ossia Librarian Reuben Blundell is a second-year DMA student in Orchestral Conducting, studying with Professor Neil Varon. He became involved in Ossia conducting works by Schnittke, Berg and Oldham. This season, his lecture recital will include performances by Philharmonia of recently composed Australian orchestral music. He will also lead the orchestra in a performance of Angelfire, by Joseph Schwantner.
Outside of Eastman, Reuben directed the Young Musician's Orchestra in Miami, and has conducted the New World Symphony, the Naples and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestras, and the Sydney, Melbourne and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras. He is also a violin student with Professor Zvi Zeitlin, and completed violin fellowships at the New World Symphony and the Tanglewood Music Center. | Andrew Colella, composer and violist Andrew Colella is completing his final year at Eastman as a composer and violist. He values perspective and creativity.
| Elizabeth Kelly, composer Elizabeth Kelly is currently a Ph.D student in composition at the Eastman School of Music. She was awarded both a University of Rochester Sproull fellowship and a U.S. Dept. of Education Javits fellowship for her Ph.D. studies. Elizabeth'sworks have been performed throughout the United States and Europe. She is currently working on commissions from the Ann Arbor Symphony, Eleanor and RayCross Foundation and Robert G. Boehmler Foundation for the 2007-8 season.
| Jenine Lawson, theorist Jenine Lawson is pursuing a Ph.D. in Music Theory at the Eastman School of Music. Currently, she is a lecturer of Music Theory at Ithaca College, where she teaches sight-singing and theory courses to undergraduates. Her research interests include the music of Milton Babbitt, the cognition of atonal music, and Eastern Orthodox music. Jenine especially enjoys teaching music theory courses, and was recently awarded Eastman’s T.A. prize for the 2005-6 school year. She holds degrees in Economics and Music Theory from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, as well as a M.A. in Music Theory from the Eastman School of Music. She also serves as Co-Editor for Intégral .
| Sara Parulski, oboist Born in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, Sara Parulski isa mess and a half. Terribly indecisive as to what she intends to eventually endup doing with her life, at the moment she is nearing the end of her pursuit of abachelor's degree in Music Education and Oboe Performance at the Eastman School ofMusic in Rochester, NY. In her free time (of which there is apparently a substantialamount) she tends to find her hands full of paint after attacking stretched canvases,or full of glue after binding books in the Sibley Music Library's ConservationDepartment. Sara secretly possesses an affinity for photography, but also possesses only an inexpensive Kodak Easyshare camera. However, she makes dowith what she's got, and usually has fun.
| Scott Perkins, composer/theorist/voice Connecticut native Scott Perkins enjoys an active life in many aspects of music. He studied theory, composition, and voice at Boston University before starting his graduate work at Eastman in 2002. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Theory and Composition at Eastman, where he studies with Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon and teaches undergraduate theory courses. Performances of his music and his engagements as a tenor have taken him throughout North America and Europe. He also performs weekly in Rochester as a member of the Christ Church Schola Cantorum, of which he is also assistant director. Personal Website
| Robert Pierzak, composer/conductor Robert Pierzak said something very funny last night, but he cannot recall whatthat was. Among his avid interests including table tennis, and generally havinga good time, Robert also likes music.
| Baljinder Sekhon II, composer/percussion/electronics Composer Baljinder Sekhon, II began his musical studies in percussion when he was seven years old and started composing when he was thirteen. Currently a graduate student at the Eastman School of Music, he has studied with Robert Morris and Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, serves as a board member for the OSSIA New Music Ensemble and has recently recieved a T.A. position in the Eastman Computer Music Center. Baljinder has been invited to attend the Bang on a Can Summer Festival and Institute this summer in North Adams, Massachusetts as a composition fellow. His works have been performed at major American conservatories and universities such as the Cleveland Institute of Music, the University of Florida and the University of North Texas. Baljinder studied percussion with James Hall, Christopher Lee, William Messerschmidt and Myles Overton, III. He has performed professionally in the percussion sections of several orchestras including the Augusta Symphony and the South Carolina Philharmonic. Baljinder earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of South Carolina where his primary composition teacher was John Fitz Rogers. Baljinder is a 2006 recipient of the ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composers Award. Personal Website
Back to Top | Scott Worthington, bassist/composer Scott Worthington is currently a member of the Applied Music department at the Eastman School of Music, in the studio of James VanDemark. As a bassist he is accomplished in both jazz & classical styles having toured Japan, Canada, and NYC with the Monterey Jazz Festival's Next Generation Jazz Orchestra & performing at the Lucerne Festival with the Lucerne Festival Academy.
